The Army Times Book of Great Land Battles: From the Civil War to the Gulf War
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (April, 1999)
Average review score:

A good military read.A must read for history students or buffs. Going through 150 years of wafrom the Civil war to the Gulf. Each war written in conscise chapters that leave out much of the fluff and none of the detail. This book taught me about wars I never knew happened. This is one of the best Military History books I have read.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf
Published in Unknown Binding by Hale ()
Average review score:

A readable and clarifying account. It's a shame to find that this book is out of print because it avoids the two pitfalls that many books fall into regarding this vast battle: it doesn't get confusing and it's well researched enough that it doesn't neglect any details of what actually happened. It is also told equally from the Japanese as well as the American perspective. Easily the best book about the subject I have read.

Birth and Rebirth on an Alaskan Island: The Life of an Alutiiq Healer
Published in Hardcover by University of Georgia Press (05 January, 2001)
Average review score:

This is a quietly beautiful and fascinating storyThis is a quietly beautiful and fascinating story--a work of scholarship and a work of love. Joanne Mulcahy has written a stunning book about Mary Peterson, a remarkable woman, and about the cultural revival that both Mary and the author played crucial roles in bringing about. It is something few Americans know anything about--and all of us should.

Blueberry Peaches, Red Robin Pie, An annoted Cookbook of Mississippi Gulf Coast Recipies
Published in Spiral-bound by Annabelle Publishing (10 September, 2001)
Average review score:

All about real food, real enjoyment, and real livingBlueberry Peaches, And Red Robin Pie is a wonderful cookbook for lovers of the foods and fruits of the Mississippi Delta. A believer in using fine, fresh ingredients, cook Stella presents her luscious no-nonsense recipes for salads, chowders, soups, of course seafood, meats, poultry, and side dishes such as Dolce Acorn Squash. Stella does not believe in substitutions or skimping on ingredients. Pasta dishes are also included, such as mouth- watering recipes for oysters and brie with pasta and shrimp and mushrooms with pasta. Breakfast dishes include recipes for Eggs Benedict A La Stella (with asparagus and ham) and a marvelous Spinach Omelet, delicious for either breakfast or supper. Casual eating experiences include recipes for sandwiches, drinks and desserts. One of the best parts of Blueberry, Peaches, And Red Robin Pie is the little essays and anecdotes between chapters written by both Paul and Stella. Also little helpful "frog" hints help the cook to do her best. Just reading the list of fish and shellfish recipes is enough to tempt anyone: Fried Soft Shell Crabs, Blackened "Any Fish", Crabmeat Quiche (good hot or cold), and Fresh Tuna Steak in A Garden (served with lettuce, tomato, green pepper, cucumber, sweet onion and Balsamic vinegar). Blueberry Peaches, And Red Robin Pie is all about real food, real enjoyment, and real living. It is an altogether delightful cookbook. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Citizen Warriors: America's National Guard and Reserve Forces & the Politics of National Security
Published in Hardcover by Presidio Pr (January, 1997)
Average review score:

Thoughtful analysis.Duncan, an Annapolis graduate and Vietnam veteran,
was the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve
Affairs during Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and so
uniquely positioned to observe the deployment
and performance of the National Guard and Reserve
units so vital to our efforts in the Gulf.
He examines the Reserves as essential to the All-Volunteer Total Force, and in the context of politics, outside of which the policies cannot be understood. Of particular note is his discussion of the unfortunate roundout brigades, which were activated but not deployed for the Gulf War, and the implications for future operations.
Finally, the author provides some observations, cautions, and recommendations, and concludes "Only if we are wise in our reliance upon our citizen warriors, can we be assured that in the future, as in the past, they will immediately respond to the war tocsin when new dangers arrive".

The Complete Cruising Guide to the Middle Gulf
Published in Unknown Binding by Cruising Charts ()
Average review score:

Using Gerry Cruising Charts GuidesThese are the best guides to cruising the Sea of Cortez. I have used the charts while cruising and have worked aboard the Berinci Mevki helping to survey many of the anchorages, rocks and currents in the gulf. I can attest to the devotion to accuracy and completeness with which Gerry has worked over the years to supply first class information about a complex subject. After 40 years of charting Gerry is still at it while all the rest have retired from the struggle. The best charts continue to improve.

Confederates on the Caney : an illustrated account of the Civil War on the Texas Gulf Coast
Published in Unknown Binding by Mouth of Caney Publication ; Distributed by B.J. McKinney ()
Average review score:

A great Texas Civil War research book."Confederates on the Caney" is really a great research book for the Civil War in Texas. It is a first of its kind and Mr. McKinney did a wonderful job in giving us a first hand look at the civil war on the Texas gulf coast. Us Texas "Civil War" buffs now have something to read, learn and look at from Texas's role during the war. The maps are new and fresh as well as the many photos of the excavated artifacts such as buttons, bullets, buckles, ordnance and more. The book well describes the historical foot note of an event that took place in a small unlikely section on the Texas gulf coast. His use of perspectives from both Confederate and Federal view points from the "Official Records" enhance the story of Texas's resistance of Union occupation. There is a lot of information crammed into this little book. I look forward to seeing more of Mr. Mckinneys work.
